With a width of 15 meters, this launching shaft is very narrow. However, this is where the tunnel boring machine had to start!
Here we can see the top of the erector, a rotary machine which places the segments in their final position on the wall.
The propulsion of a tunnel boring machine is provided by hydraulic jacks which take support, either on the wall of the tunnel via studs (radial support) when the rock is hard enough, or on the support of the tunnel already in place (longitudinal support).
To process the 1.3 million tonnes of cuttings that the tunnel boring machine will produce during this period, the project management has chosen to use a large-scale installation.
The sludge from the tunnel boring machine circulates mainly in a closed circuit: once evacuated through the Courbevoie well, it is conveyed through the marinating pipe to their treatment station installed on the Seine. There, they are subjected to filtration and reprocessing in order to be reused by the mud pressure tunnel boring machine. Residual waste is evacuated by barge.
The Seine base treats 2,500 m3 of mud per hour, or the equivalent of an Olympic swimming pool. These pass through several successive filters. Pebbles larger than 7 mm are extracted using a trommel rotary sieve. The filtrate obtained is then purified by hydrocyclones, which use centrifugal force to separate particles larger than 63 mm from the liquids. Once de-sanded, the sludge is mixed with water and bentonite - a category of clay - in huge vats.

The pipe is connected and extended in order to allow air circulation on the machine, but also all along the tunnel in order to avoid the overheating of the machines in operation, and the accumulation of dust or gas naturally emitted as by example CO2.
This mortar is injected between the ground and the lining segments. It ensures that the structure of the tunnel is waterproof.
As the tunnel floor can be occupied by machines, works or construction materials, the footbridge provides pedestrian access for the duration of the site.

Bentonite slurry is used for excavating. Its viscosity can be made more or less thick or liquid depending on the nature of the soil, to help excavate more easily and make the debris materials more fluid.
The pumps allow the injection and removal of the cuttings through the pickling lines: two pumps are on the machine and every 400 meters there is a relay pump in the tunnel.
The mucking pipe evacuates excavation debris. The lower pipe channels a particular type of slurry called bentonite. The upper pipe transports the debris back to the slurry treatment station. The pressure in the pipes varies between 3 and 6 bar, with a flow rate of 2,300 cubic meters per hour.
An aggregate of backfill material is used to make the ‘floor’ of the tunnel, or rather the railway platform where the tracks of the RER will be laid down.
